OUR STORY

Brewpub Pioneers

Seward Brewing Company was founded in 2014 by Erik Slater and Hillary Bean. With over 40 years of combined experience in the food and beverage industry, these two have brought their passion for great beer, delicious food and outstanding service to the locals and visitors of Seward.

Now with their daughter Rowan, they raise the bar, set trends and blaze trails about what a family owned brewpub can be. We value teamwork and camaraderie, which is reflected in our amazing staff.

THE LEADERSHIP

Erik Slater

12 years @ SBC
Owner · Executive Chef · Brewer · Shit Fix it Guy

As a chef in Alaska since 1996, Erik honed his skills across the state and brought his expertise to Seward in 2000. He brews the beer, runs the kitchen, and fixes everything that breaks.

Hillary Bean

12 years @ SBC
Owner · CFO · GM · Makes It All Happen · All Around Bad Ass

Hillary moved to Seward in 1996 and managed a busy harbor bar for 18 years before opening SBC with Erik. She runs the business, keeps the lights on, and makes it all happen.

Rowan Bean

12 years @ SBC
Beertender · Manager · Training Coordinator · Natural Born Killer

Raised in the pub, Rowan is a natural leader who manages the front of house, trains staff, and pours a mean pint.

APPLICANT FAQ

Before You Apply

When do you open, when do I start, when do you close? +

We open the first week of May and you will be required to be there 7–10 days prior for setup and training. We close mid-September and everyone is required to stay and help clean.

Do I need a TAPS card or Alaska Food Handlers card? +

Yep. Everyone who works in a restaurant must have a food handlers card — the test can be taken online. Servers and bartenders are required to have alcohol management training, which can be done at SBC.

Is there employee housing available? +

Sorry, there just isn't a building big enough in Seward for SBC to have housing available. Housing in Seward is tight and it's best to start looking early. There is a Facebook page called 'Seward Housing' that posts available housing all the time.

Is there staff meals? +

Yes and no. BOH gets a shift meal off a limited menu. FOH will receive 30% off the menu. All staff, when they are off duty, can receive 30% off food — drinks are not discounted.

Do I need to have my own uniform? +

Oh yes. FOH requires plain indigo jeans (no bling) and a solid black top. Shoes will be black non-slip. BOH is required to have grey or black short-sleeved Dickies work shirt, blue or black jeans, and non-slip kitchen shoes.

Can I get my mail sent to SBC? +

Nope. USPS mail in Seward is strictly delivered to the PO office box in town. You can get your own box or get general delivery.

Can I have the 4th of July weekend off? +

No way Jose. We are at the finish line of the Mt. Marathon race — this is our busiest time and we need all staff on hand.

When do we get paid? +

Every 2 weeks on Wednesdays. Checks can be picked up after 2pm.

Is there direct deposits? +

Sorry, we cannot do direct deposits. However, our bank is located just 2 blocks away.

Is there a bonus for employees? +

At this time we do not offer bonuses for our staff, but we do throw a damn fine end-of-the-season party which includes all sorts of goodies.

I want to learn how to brew beer, can I help in the brewery? +

You and everyone else. If you want to see the brewery in action, stop in.
